Bolton Dining Hall Correct HVAC in Server Room
Existing HVAC system extended to provide additional cooling in addition to a new wall-mounted mini-split system.
Project context
Server room was overheating due to lack of sufficient cooling capacity. Existing fan-coil system was not performant and in need of replacement. Server capacity in the room had also increased over the years, leading to greater heat rejection by server equipment. The existing HVAC system was extended to provide cooling via new air terminals, and a new mini-split unit was added along with appropriate housekeeping pad, and new thermostat for the space.
My work
I investigated the existing server equipment in the space, and the relevant construction details of the exterior facing wall. I created an excel chart to manually determine the heat-load of the space, which was then used to determine how much air from the existing HVAC system could be used for the server room, and the remaining load that had to be covered by the new mini-split system. I also assisted with the selection of the the mini-split system.
